In addition to kendo, our club offers a change to practice All Japan Kendo Federation (ZNKR) Iaido as well as Suio-ryu iai-kenpo. Note that there is no separate beginners course for Iaido, you can start it anytime, just contact us .

Teaching is in Finnish and/or English depending on the participants.

KENDO

Kendo is a Japanese modern full contact martial art, originally descended from traditional japanese swordsmanship. In kendo, the steel sword is replaced by one made of bamboo, the shinai, which is used to strike an opponent wearing protective gear called the bogu. As a sport, kendo is a great way to develop oneself not only physically, but also mentally. At it’s best, kendo is a really fast game of chess.

ZNKR IAIDO

Where kendo focuses mainly on dueling, Iaido is about perfecting the first strike: the draw of the sword from the scabbard and cutting or striking the opponent with that draw, followed by removing the blood from the blade (metaphorically) and returning the sword to it’s scabbard. Usually, a blunt sword called an iaito, is used for training.

SUIO-RYU IAI-KENPO

The core of Suio-ryu is in drawing and using the sword, but as a 400-year old comprehensive martial tradition, it also contains other skills: staff techniques, armed close combat, battlefield sword skills, naginata techniques etc. We train as a part of the Finland shibu, receiving instruction from the current head of the tradition.
